New Soups 5/14/12

I am going to keep this very short this week. In the middle of testing some new recipes for some soups for next week. A lot of people are asking about Gazpacho, this is really one soup you want to eat in season. As soon as I see tomatoes and we get some really nice weather we will start making it. I don’t know if you have been noticing but we really have been having a nice spring. Get out, spring markets are opening each week. Good food is waiting for you. Oh! By the way, I think it is going to be a little colder this week. These soups should work.

Have you been seeing all those interesting green’s in the market? Me too and I could not resist. Bought spinach and I bring you for the first time ever Spinach Dal with Sunchokes. Here is one of those truly healthy soups involving vegetables we do not eat enough of. I am anticipating some nicer weather this weekend, so come on down.

New Soups 4/30/12

This week we bring you fan favorites. Over the last couple of weeks someone asked me to make 1 of these soups. So here you go. Still do not see any sign of spring, nicer weather than last year but still cold out. Try one of these on those cold days.

What vegetable should we talk about this week? How about Peas, here is something I bet you did not know? Green peas stand out as an environmentally friendly food. Agricultural research has shown that pea crops can provide the soil with important benefits. With the help of bacteria in the soil, peas are able to take nitrogen gas from the air and convert it into more complex and usable forms. This process increases nitrogen available in the soil without the need for added fertilizer. Peas also have a relatively shallow root system which can help prevent erosion of the soil, and once the peas have been picked, the plant remainders tend to break down relatively easily for soil replenishment. Finally, rotation of peas with other crops has been shown to lower the risk of pest problems. Good for you and also good for the land. Win, Win.

New Soups 4/16/12

What’s New and Beneficial about Sweet Potatoes? Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes may be one of nature’s unsurpassed sources of beta-carotene. Several recent studies have shown they raise our blood levels of vitamin A. This benefit may be particularly true for children. They also help promote healing and have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients.

Next up is Cauliflower, an excellent source of vitamin C and K, and a very good source of manganese. It also offers Anti-inflammatory nutrients, Cardiovascular Support and the fiber content makes it a great digestive support. Lots of good reasons for healthy eating.

So let’s talk about Brussel Sprouts. Sometimes I do a soup to give you an opportunity to try something you might not buy. Honestly I can count on my 1 hand how many times I have eaten Brussels. So I did some reading and was surprised in what I came up with. They are very good for our bodies. Did you know they have cholesterol-lowering benefits, they offer cancer-preventive components, improve the stability of DNA inside of our white blood cells, they have huge amounts of sulfur-which helps the body in detoxification. They are an important dietary source of many vitamin antioxidants, including C, E, and A. Here is the most surprising fact  they are an important sources of omega-3s, I thought only fish had them.  Healthy choices and opportunities, that’s what you find at Farmers Markets. See ya.

Well I think there are definitely signs of spring coming our way. You feel it first thing in the morning when you open the door, maybe I don’t need a coat today. New Soups 3/26/12

Well at least it is a little warmer this week, still does not feel like spring yet though. Lots of good things in the market, hoping there will still be some Brussel sprouts. I am thinking of a new soup for them. If you are looking to add something to your Easter menu the Onion soup would work well with beef or lamb. I will have a couple of other ones next week for Easter.

My friend Pam Brown is author of The Healthy Living Program. She will be teaching a class at Tuesday, April 10th at 6:30pm, Whole Foods, Redmond. This class has a lot of good value and really one of the easiest ways to learn about healthy eating and balance for your body.
